What is thermally expandable graphite (TEG)?

TEG is AIR WATER GROUP’s original thermally expandable graphite processed intercalation compounds prepared from natural graphite, which is utilizing our patented technology to give thermal expansion properties.

Our history with TEG

Based on our operational expertise and practical experience for TEG we have accumulated over our 30-year history as the one and only manufacturer in Japan, our rigorous quality control and the long-term stability of different properties are maintained.

Key principles of TEG

The materials and acid wet impregnated in the layered TEG are gasified by heating. After that, the pressure of that gasification expands each layer in the vertical direction of the hexagonal tabular crystals that are stacking carbon layers.

Features of TEG

Thermal expansion of standard products will start at temperatures between 200 C and 220 C.

When heated, it expands by as much as approx. 200-fold.

With some grades of TEG, the temperature where it starts to expand is 260 C.

Those grades of TEG are suitable for applications requiring high molding temperature.

When added to combustible substances such as rubber and resins, TEG will also serve as flame retardants*. In addition, it can be used in combination with phosphate esters or other non-halogen flame retardants.

TEG is capable of showing flame retardancy which means a substance’s resistance to combustion. This is because the carbon layers forming during thermal expansion can prevent burning.

Adding TEG to combustible materials such as rubber and resins makes them suitable for use as flame retardants in many different applications such as construction materials.

As TEG is halogen-free, it is superior to halogenated flame retardants that are the mainstream products for the same application in terms of environmental friendliness and safety.

When used with phosphorus or other flame retardants, TEG can show greater flame retardancy.

Since the demand for flame retardants is increasing globally and the environmental regulations become restrictive, the expectations for TEG, that suit needs of environmentally friendly products are growing.

Globally, TEG is mainly produced in China, but in recent years, from the perspective of diversifying suppliers, our high-quality TEG has been attracting renewed attention.
